Collective inaction, omission, and non-action: when not acting is indeed on ‘us’

چکیده

Abstract The statement that we are currently failing to address some of humanity’s greatest challenges seems uncontroversial—we not doing enough limit global warming a maximum 2 °C and exposing vulnerable people preventable diseases when produce herd immunity. But what singles out such failings (inactions) from all the things did do (non-actions) unintended? Unlike their individualist counterparts, collective inaction omission have yet received much attention in literature. (Unintended) inaction, I argue, can be attributed group agents where action (or outcome) x perform produce) was collectively feasible at time t each agent had sufficient reason contribute performing producing) or others reasonable expectation they would . show that, perhaps surprisingly, speak even only one member fails act. However, large dispersed groups concerned, there is often no meaningful way attributing failings. Still, contend failure close emissions gap and—in cases—to generate immunity indeed on us

When an Action is an Intentional Omission

I use the normative theory of intentional omissions to argue that ordinary uses of ‘ s intentionally’ are systematically ambiguous. There are occasions where they might be used to attribute intentional omissions rather than intentional actions. One can thus explain a number of puzzles that have been taken to be puzzles about the concept of intentional action: the Knobe effect, the connection ...

When action is not least

We examine the nature of the stationary character of the Hamilton action S for a space-time trajectory worldline x t of a single particle moving in one dimension with a general time-dependent potential energy function U x , t . We show that the action is a local minimum for sufficiently short worldlines for all potentials and for worldlines of any length in some potentials. For long enough worl...

Marbles in Inaction: Counterfactual Simulation and Causation by Omission

Consider the following causal explanation: The ball went through the goal because the defender didn’t block it. There are at least two problems with citing omissions as causal explanations. First, how do we choose the relevant candidate omission (e.g. why the defender and not the goalkeeper). Second, how do we determine what would have happened in the relevant counterfactual situation (i.e. may...

The Humanitarian’s Dilemma: collective action or inaction in international relief? - ODI Background Notes

‘...highly competitive with each other. Polluted by the internal power politics and the unsavoury characteristics seen in many big corporations, large aid agencies can be obsessed with raising money through their own appeal efforts. Media coverage as an end in itself is too often an aim of their activities. Marketing and branding have too high a profile. Perhaps worst of all, relief efforts in ...

Imaging When Acting: Picture but Not Word Cues Induce Action-Related Biases of Visual Attention

In line with the Theory of Event Coding (Hommel et al., 2001a), action planning has been shown to affect perceptual processing - an effect that has been attributed to a so-called intentional weighting mechanism (Wykowska et al., 2009; Memelink and Hommel, 2012), whose functional role is to provide information for open parameters of online action adjustment (Hommel, 2010). The aim of this study ...
